One of the highlights of my high school career was working with kids. I had worked with kids often during community events such as swim meets and dance shows throughout the years. I like kids- they always seem to be happy made ecstatic by the simplest of things. I think that they're really easy and fun to work with if you can get down on their level. However, I was lucky enough to have more constant interaction with kids throughout high school. I babysat two young boys that live across the street, Max and Mikal, for four years. It has been a privilege watching them grow up and, in a sense, growing up with them. Max and Mikal help me understand what kids consider to be important and what they glean from life. I love how clear the world is in kids' perspectives; there is very little bias in their worlds. Everything is just laid out in front of them.
I also spent a summer teaching a creative writing workshop for a group of sixth grade girls. They were full of ideas and full of energy, testing my abilities to control a group as a whole and keep the group's focus on one particular subject. The workshop was rewarding, however; all of the girls learned something new and had fun, which was the original intention of the workshop. That workshop also helped me to realize that working with kids is something I would like to continue with in my future.
As the years passed and I watched my former students and my neighbors grow up, I realized that I would never shake my desire to be with kids and to help them. The kids that our generation is familiar with and the generations after are going to be our future. They bring a lot of joy to their households and their communities. I find kids to be charming and can't help but to want to make them happy. Not only do I want kids to be able to provide a better world in the future- I want them to be able to enjoy their time and enjoy the futures that they build.
I think that the only way to know whether or not you are doing a good job taking care of kids is to judge the kids' reactions. Kids may be good for their babysitters or teachers but if kids like someone, they have a tendency to stick close. A kid will go back and visit his favorite teacher, tell his babysitter about his day at school, or invite them to play his favorite game. I have a really strong relationship with all of the kids I have worked with, which is something that I am really proud of.
The kids I have worked with have been nothing but a positive influence on me. Between the boys that I babysat and the girls I taught in my creative writing workshop, I have learned how to relate to kids on their own level. I have come to appreciate and understand their opinions and what they offer to both the present and the future.
